ALTAVISTA popped up well over a century ago, in 1905, right on the railroad that became known as the Virginian Railway. A planned community, ALTAVISTA was carefully laid out and attracted residents with free lots, named for a nearby family farm. As the point of intersection for two different railways that are still active today, ALTAVISTA was built from the ground-up to be a successful and charming town.

A tight-knit community, ALTAVISTA established its commitment to supporting local businesses, merchants, and farmers with the longtime, continuing tradition of the Trade Lot. Beginning in the early 1900s with the inception of the town, the man known as Uncle Billy Lane would come to ALTAVISTA the first Saturday of every month to sell, trade, and barter goods. The Trade Lot continues today at the community's massive flea market. They even celebrate the founding of the Trade Lot with a one-day annual festival!
